Age Restrictions
What are the age requirements for renting?
Minimum age for renters and additional drivers is 23 years old.
Drivers License
What kind of license do I need?
All renters and drivers must have a valid Ohio drivers license. We do not accept out of state licenses at this time. Also, we cannot accept a suspended license even if the person has driving privileges at this time.
Insurance Questions
Can't I just buy your insurance?
We are not licensed insurance agents, you will need to get insurance from an agent. If you don't have one, we can recommend one to you. Minimum coverage can be as little as $30-$40.
What if I just have liability?
That's ok! You can still rent if you just have liability. You will just pay an additional fee for a Physical Damage Waiver. The Physical Damage Waiver will cover damage to the rental vehicle in accordance to the rental contract.
What if I have Full Coverage?
As long as your comprehensive and collision coverage transfers to the rental car, there will not be an additional charge.
Rental Rates
How is the rate calculated?
The rates are based on a 24 hour rental day and that day starts when you pick up the vehicle. The vehicle must be returned by the time they were originally picked up on the due back day. There is a 59 minute grace period. If the vehicle is returned after that time, the renter is charged for another full day. Rentals returned on a Saturday are due back by noon regardless of what time they were rented.
Are there any additional fees?
Taxes, fees, and other charges will be listed on the rental contract and a Representative will go over these charges with you before you sign the contract. The City of Cleveland does charge a one time fee of $6 per rental contract. Sales tax(es) apply to all rentals.
Additional Drivers
Can someone else drive the car that I rented?
Additional drivers may be added to the contract at no additional cost, but must be listed on the rental contract. All drivers need to present their driver license and insurance information to the rental agent at the time of rental.
While I am Renting
What should I do if I am having problems with my rental car?
Call the rental location immediately. The phone number is located at the top of the contract.
What should I do if I am involved in an accident?
Call the police immediately to report the accident. Get as much information as possible from the other driver. Then call the rental location as soon as possible.
What should I do if the vehicle is stolen?
Call the police immediately to report the stolen vehicle. Then call the rental location to notify them of the situation.
What should I do if I lock the keys in the vehicle?
The customer is responsible for all potential charges regard keys locked in the vehicle. If the keys are locked in the vehicle during business hours, the customer may call the rental location to receive help. There is a $10 charge for an employee to come to the vehicle to unlock the car. If the keys are locked in the vehicle outside of business hours the customer can call a locksmith. Again, the customer will be responsible for any charges that may occur. The customer would also be responsible for any damage that occurs to the car while the keys are being retrieved. The customer may choose to wait until business hours; in that case the customer will not be reimbursed for loss of use of the rental car.
What if I lose the keys?
City Auto Rental does not provide spare keys. If you have lost or misplaced the keys, you need to contact the rental location. You will be responsible for the cost of a replacement key.
What if I run out of fuel?
The customer is fully responsible.
Can I smoke in the vehicle?
No. All of our rental fleet is non-smoking at this time.
Returning the Vehicle
Do I need to clean the car before I return it?
Yes. The interior of the vehicle should be returned in the same condition as it was when you picked it up. You do not need to wash the exterior.
Can I put air fresheners in it?
No. Our rental policy does not allow for customers to put any time of air freshener, spray, perfume, or any other type of product in the vehicle. If the car is returned smelling of any type of the above mentioned product a cleaning fee will be assessed.
Do I have to fill the gas tank?
The amount of fuel that needs to be in the car is indicated on the rental contract. You need to return the vehicle with the same amount of fuel in it that it had when you picked it up. If you return the car with extra fuel, we appreciate it, but have no way of reimbursing you. Charges may apply if you return the vehicle with less fuel than when it went out.
When does the vehicle have to be back?
The vehicle needs to be returned at the same time it was picked up. If you picked the vehicle up at 1:00pm, then it needs to be returned at 1:00pm on the due date. There is a 59 minute grace period. If the vehicle is not returned within that time, the customer is charged for another full day. Vehicles returned on a Saturday must be back by noon regardless of the time they were rented.
Who pays for Parking tickets, turnpike tolls and the other photo tickets for red lights, speeding, etc.?
The renter is responsible for paying these tickets. When we receive those in the mail, the city that issued the ticket is given the renter's name and address.
